Sue’s love of training began as a teenager. Her training experience not only included dogs, but horses as well. Sue has instructed handlers in Alaska, Arizona and Idaho. In Arizona she became active in the local AKC Club, and began teaching puppy and obedience classes through the club, and then through the Parks & Recreations Department for several years. She offered private lessons specializing in correction of problem or aggressive behavior. Sue started and operated a pet sitting business for several years, specializing in dogs, cats, and horses. She also taught lecture classes through NIC in behavior management and general training skills. Sue is also an AKC, Canine Good Citizen evaluator. In the 1990’s, she became involved with K9 Search & Rescue Unit in Sitka, Alaska. She certified her first SAR dog, Carly, in Air Scent/Wilderness. After moving to Arizona she trained Dylan, and later Phoenix, for trailing and air scent. All 3 Dobermans certified in Air scent and HRD (Human Remains Detection). Sue places a high value on education and training opportunities and has participated in the following: Legacy Training/Terry Ryan – behavior shaping/click/treat training; air scent, tracking, and HRD training with the United Doberman Club in St. Louis, MO and in Riverside, CA; Marcia Koenig (HRD/tracking); State wide training conferences in Arizona and California; regional SAR training opportunities including Incident Command management theory, lost person behavior, Alzheimer’s behavior, tracking, air scent, GPS operations, firearms handling, wilderness survival skills; a 5 day HRD training in Michigan; as well as weekly trainings and mock searches with a local unit. She also attended the Janice Gunn 2 day obedience workshops in 2008 and 2010. While most of her efforts were directed to Search and Rescue, she competed in Obedience until her dog, Dylan couldn’t jump the heights due to a shoulder injury from his Search and Rescue work. Her most rewarding moment - obviously involving Dylan - was when he followed a 24 hour old trail through forest and dirt roads over 1 mile to find a lost, elderly Sheltie, which he had to flush from behind a tree where it was hiding. The scent article was a dog bed used by 8 Shelties. Sue has been a member of the APTD (Association of Professional Dog Trainers), DPCA (Doberman Pinscher Club of America), UDC (United Doberman Club), White Mountain Kennel Club, Sitka Volunteer SAR Unit/Fire Department, and the Navajo County Mounties SAR Unit, as well as having been active in Doberman Rescue for over 10 years., which he had to flush from behind a tree where it was hiding.
